Binge Eating, or Compulsive Food Intake Disorder, is a serious pathology. Derived from psychological and/or psychiatric factors, compulsion has a negative impact on the body. At stake is the physical and mental state of the person affected by the disorder.

Binge eating is characterized by excessive food intake. Most of the time, this type of episodes occurs without the presence of hunger or physical need for food.

If not detected in time, binge eating can lead to health problems such as diabetes or cardiovascular problems. The typical behavior of someone with binge eating is to eat too much food, without control. Anorexia or obesity can often arise as a consequence.

What factors can be the basis of binge eating?

Some factors that may be the basis of binge eating:

  • Lack of self-esteem;
  • Depression;
  • Grief situations;
  • Anxiety;
  • Physical or psychological violence;

Binge eating symptoms

Although they may not be aware that they are suffering from an eating disorder at first, there are some symptoms that reveal themselves early on. The first, possibly transversal to many, is when food becomes a taboo subject.

In binge eating, overconsumption of food is done but never mentioned by the person suffering. And often the person tends to deny it when faced with the situation (particularly if they later develop another eating disorder). Thus, we list some signs that binge eating can be a problem:

  • Eating too fast and too much;
  • Refusal to deal with stressful situations, taking refuge in food;
  • Eating even without being hungry;

  • Eating after being satisfacted and in always exaggerated amounts;
  • Eating alone or hidden from other people;
  • Feelings of sadness or guilt after episodes of eating too much.

How to control and treat binge eating

Binge eating must be controlled and treated, but by a specialized team. Being complex, an eating disorder should involve a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, psychologists, nurses, among others.

Of course, before anything else, it is necessary to recognize the problem on the part of those who suffer from binge eating. It is important to control binge eating at first and then learn how to deal with it.
